Happy Monday . . . are you ready to approach the week with optimism and a positive attitude? I'm going to do everything I can to let the little annoyances go, avoid complaining, and to lend a helping hand when it's needed. I've been thinking a lot about the whole notion of 'giving back' - what it means to others, and what it means to me. With that in mind let me give you a 'What If' that I am pondering:
"What if, in addition to 'random acts of kindness', I engage in concious, thoughtful, 'non random acts of kindness'. What if I think ahead, look for opportunities to be kind and generous to the people that I love, strangers, colleagues, my pets, friends, family, people who annoy me. What if I make that a daily, weekly monthly practice. What if I give back generously with no expectations of anything in return because I am truly blessed and because I am grateful for everything that I have and everything that I am."
I don't want to sound like a pollyanna, or a do gooder - heaven forbid! But I do want to lead by example. A wonderful friend has been doing just that - making positive change in her life, and striving to lead by example in an effort to help others. I am so proud of her, and I am inspired by what she is doing. When you lead by example, maybe it's 'catchy', like the common cold. Maybe it rubs off.
In the coming year, I'm going to be writing a lot about 'giving back'. I'm preparing to make it a theme for my 50th year on this planet because I am grateful, it makes me happy, and I want to make others happy with no expectations of anything in return. I'm going to make 'giving back' my primary 2008 New Year Resolution because helping others is one of my dreams. 'What if' we all try to spend a small part of our day 'giving back' - I imagine the world just might be a happier, better place . . .
