Earth Day 2008 is now history, but if you want to continue the pro-environment momentum by celebrating another 'good for the earth' holiday', Arbor Day 2008 falls on Friday April 25, just two days from now. It's
Wednesday, Tip Day for ways to 'Give The Boot To Our Carbon Footprints'. In 2008 my New Year Resolution is to 'show gratitude' for my blessings by 'giving back' and the environment is one of my recipients. I dedicate three columns each week to news and information about small, daily steps we can take to reduce our Carbon Footprints. Consider the huge, positive, long-range impact on the environment if each one of us performs 'habitual' actions - like driving fewer miles, using more energy efficient light bulbs, and turning off lights and computers when we leave rooms. My goal, as an individual, is to urge others to follow my lead, and take a few small steps each and every day toward protecting the environment.
Much is being written by scientists about the positive impact of planting more trees on Global Warming. But, concern about trees and their beneficial impact on our natural habitats is not new. Arbor Day was the brainchild of J. Sterling Morton and celebrated for the first time April 10,1872 in my home state of Nebraska. The Arbor Day Foundation, has a lot of interesting historical information about Morton's quest to plant trees in the plains of Nebraska, as well as useful information about planting and caring for your own trees.
If you want to celebrate Arbor Day - and make a difference for the environment - why not make a Decision to 'go for it' today? Define what you want to do, educate yourself, and Develop A Plan so you can take action this spring. Why not follow the Five Step I Resolve To . . . System for achieving your dreams resolutions and goals? There is no better time than the present to learn what you can do to contribute. Why not consider planting a tree in your yard, or getting involved in local efforts to plant and preserve trees.
