It's Friday, Tip Day for ways to 'Give The Boot To Our Carbon Footprints'. In 2008 my New Year
Resolution is to 'show gratitude' for my blessings by 'giving back' and the environment is one of my recipients. I dedicate three columns each week to news, information and ideas about small, daily steps we can take to reduce our Carbon Footprints. Consider the huge, positive, long-range impact on the environment if each one of us performs 'habitual' actions - like driving fewer vehicle miles, using more energy efficient light bulbs, and turning off lights when we leave rooms. My goal, as an individual, is to urge others to follow my lead, and take a few small steps each and every day toward protecting the environment.
We're reaching that half-way point in the year, why not use it as an opportunity to brainstorm ways that you can do something that benefits the environment this summer . . . one small action at a time, one day at a time. You don't need to make major lifestyle changes, change your world overnight. Why not start small, think of simple, easy things that you can do each day. Need some inspiration? Here's some food for thought from one of my favorite websites, The Quote Garden . . .
"Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat money." Cree Indian Proverb
"You can't be suspicious of a tree, or accuse a bird or a squirrel of subversion or challenge the ideology of a violet." Hal Borland, Sundial of the Seasons, 1964
There's so much pollution in the air now that if it weren't for our lungs there'd be no place to put it all. " Robert Orben
"Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. " Bill Vaughn, quoted in Jon Winokur, The Portable Curmudgeon, 1987
"For 200 years we've been conquering Nature. Now we're beating it to death." Tom McMillan, quoted in Francesca Lyman, The Greenhouse Trap, 1990
"I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority." Elwyn Brooks White, Essays of E.B. White, 1977
