Happy July 4th!! On this wonderful Independence Day I hope you are preparing for good times with friends and family . . . getting ready to relax, have a few laughs, barbecue those burgers and hot dogs, and enjoy the fireworks. As you meander through the day, try to remember the environment in one small way:
stow your garbage in a trash (or recycling) bin, not on the ground in your local park, or on your local highway. Remember to Keep America Beautiful this long holiday weekend!
It's Friday, Tip Day for ways to 'Give The Boot To Our Carbon Footprints'. In 2008 my New Year Resolution is to 'show gratitude' for my blessings by 'giving back' and the environment is one of my recipients. I dedicate three columns each week to news, information and ideas about small, daily steps we can take to reduce our Carbon Footprints. Consider the huge, positive, long-range impact on the environment if each one of us performs 'habitual' actions - like driving fewer vehicle miles, using more energy efficient light bulbs, and turning off lights when we leave rooms. My goal, as an individual, is to urge others to follow my lead, and take a few small steps each and every day toward protecting the environment.
The whole 'Keep America Beautiful' (KAB) movement actually started in the 1950's and is still alive and well today. The KAB website provides a great history time line that covers its early years: "Long before being 'green' was fashionable, Keep America Beautiful formed in 1953 when a group of corporate and civic leaders met in New York City to discuss a revolutionary idea - bringing the public and private sectors toegether to develop and promote a national cleanliness ethic."
I was a kid when KAB began and remember the ads and PSA's. If you have a minute this weekend drop by the KAB website for a trip down memory lane, and a modern day look at what each one of us can do to Keep American Beautiful!
