Do you collect memories . . . objects or memorabilia that enable you to preserve days gone by that were filled with sweet happiness, wonderful people, adventures, or achievements? I am a pack rat when it comes to certain things: Christmas and Birthday Cards, letters, gifts from friends and loved ones, photographs, books, vinyl albums, and an assortment of items that help me to remember important parts of my past. I don't have so much 'stuff' that is overwhelming or messy. My treasures are carefully organized and preserved. My Mother, for instance, loves to give me quilts, music boxes and M&M Statues. All are proudly displayed and I love each one; however, I have asked my family to be selective in giving these lovely, much appreciated, gifts because eventually, one simply runs out of room.
I am also being more selective during my expeditions to gather seashells. I still bring them home but in small handfuls rather than big bags. A friend once told me that it is bad luck to bring seashells indoors. I love my collection - many of which were gathered on beaches in Florida - so I decided to compromise on this particular superstition: I have created small mini-beaches in pretty glass bowls that sit proudly in my sun room. I also intend to create a special place in my outdoor garden for the rest of my shell collection (and future shells that I will undoubtedly gather because I love to walk on the beach and pick up shells, stones and glass polished by the pounding waves).
With all of this in mind, I intend to 'Collect Memories', as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? The objective is very simple: Do at least one thing each and every day to promote health and happiness for 'YOU'. Banish the 'Someday, Someday, Someday Syndrome'. A fellow writer, Trish, shared a wonderful gift with me recently. She writes plays and essays - some of which have been published in wonderful series of books edited by Helen Kay Polaski and called the Rocking Chair Reader. These books remind me of the wonderful memories that I collect to preserve my past . . . They are brief essays that provide a glimpse of each author's past via short vignettes. I purchased and am reading two volumes. I am eager to purchase a third that is in print, along with a new volume that Trish tells me is on the way. I have been reading a few essays each night before bed, which is helping me to make good on my resolution to read at least 12 books in 2009, and to end my day with wonderful, heart warming thoughts . . . Here are links to the Rocking Chair Reader on Amazon.Com, as well as Christmas volume published by Adams Media (the Rocking Chair Reader's publisher). I am saving that volume as a special holiday treat in December . . .

Buy fresh, direct from the producer . . .That is what I love the most about local Farmers Markets. I help myself to tasty produce at the same time I enable farmers to sell their wares. Memorial Day is an annual signpost for me. It signals the official start of summer and a variety of wonderful annual traditions: Sun tea, swimming, barbecues, serious gardening, and buying fresh fruit and vegetables from stands that dot the rural roadways and open air markets that are set up in cities and towns across the Washington, DC Metropolitan Region. Last weekend I scratched a longtime itch to 'pick fresh strawberries' at Belvedere Plantation in Virginia and the fruits of my labor included smoothies, fruit salads, and plenty of stand-alone strawberries that tasted fabulous all by themselves. This coming weekend, I plan to head to the Fredericskburg Farmers Market to check out what is currently in season and buy salad fixings. I want to get back into the habit of having a daily salad. I toss in a variety of vegetables and fruit and this wonderful habit helps me to meet recommended daily servings for a healthy diet.
I intend to 'Buy Locally Grown Fresh Produce', as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? One of my clients, the Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS) in Chevy Chase, Maryland, works to protect and preserve the environment via education and advocacy programs. I have worked with ANS for going on four years, and have acquired a wealth of information that helps me to recycle, reduce my Carbon Footprint, and generally be a friend to the environment and wildlife. One of ANS's priorities is to promote and protect the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve (Maryland is nationally known for its environmental programs) and in the process ANS Conservation Advocates recently have helped to create new Farmers Markets and assist area farmers with other issues. Watching the progress has been interesting and encouraging because these efforts create a win-win situation for the environment, citizens, government, and farmers. If you would like to learn more, here are a number of interesting websites:

Name three things that consistently bring joy and happiness to your life - things that you love to do, experience, see, hear, achieve, feel: 1. _________ 2. ___________ 3. __________ . My response would have to be exercising, writing and photography - three things that I already do pretty much every day (my goal is to exercise every day, but my pattern typically is every other day). I love to contemplate questions of this nature because they enable me to set better priorities and strive for more balance in my life.
For too many years, I burned the candle at both ends and my life was out of whack: too much work and not enough play and relaxation. Having major surgery one year ago, on May 27, was a wake up call to take better care of myself physically and spiritually, and to slow down. Long before my surgery, I had acknowledged that I needed to apply the brakes and I made some serious attempts to relax. Eventually my business and career would win out and I would be back on the hamster wheel. Not any more. While I love what I do professionally, and I work hard to do a good job, I am re-tooling my lifestyle. When a client decided not to renew last December, I cut my expenses rather than automatically find another client. Eventually I will add new projects, but for now am taking better care of my health and spending more time nurturing I Resolve To . . .
In addition to fulfilling my business and home responsibilities in 2009, I am consciously working to fill my days with more 'fun' by doing things that I love to do: things that bring a smile to my face and put a song in my heart. My 'daily resolves' reflect the array of small habits and activities that bring joy, good health, happiness, and reward to my life. My 'daily resolves' make me feel good, fulfilled and content because I am not neglecting important parts of my life, the parts that nourish my spirit and good health.
With that in mind, I intend to 'Smile And Be Happy', much more often, as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? The objective is very simple: Do at least one thing each and every day to promote health and happiness for 'YOU'. Banish the 'Someday, Someday, Someday Syndrome'. With Memorial Day now a memory and the dog days of summe peeking over the horizon, I am thinking about activities that I want to pursue. Here is a short list of 'To Do's' that are sure to launch my summer in the right direction . . . I hope you will revvv up your own lifestyle with favorite activities in June, July and August - things that put a spring in your step and a promote a sense of childish anticipation for the good things that are yet to come. Enjoy your summer!
10 Things I Plan To Do During The Dog Days Of Summer:

Clarity of purpose and repetition - taking one small step at a time, one day at a time, day-after-day -are keys to success if you truly want to promote good health and increase happiness. In this case my 'good health' intention is to add more fresh fruit like raspberries, strawberries, grapes, bananas, and apples to my daily diet (not just for a few days, or weeks, but as a permanent Lifetime Resolution). I love fruit, but I can be hit and miss about including it in my meals. To improve my track record, I am practicing more thoughtful grocery shopping and meal planning, as well as tracking my actions in my journal and day planner.
Wherever I concentrate my energy and attention - work tasks, dreams, habits, appointments, errands, random conversations, exercise, and so on - determines what I achieve (or at times, fail to achieve, when little progress is made). Carity of intention and a simple gameplan promotes greater success with my daily goals. My I Resolve To . . . System for achieving resolutions, for instance, is based on common sense steps that I take to achieve things great and small. During the past five years, I have studied what the experts say about achieving goals and resolutions and I have used myself as a case-study to determine what works and what doesn't work. As it turns out, I begin every endeavor with a willingness to work hard and a determination to honor my commitments. I make things happen with five practical, common sense steps: Dare To Dream, Decide, Define, Develop A Plan, and Do It Daily.
In 2009, I have been having a ball with my 'daily resolves' - the product of my five-step system, and my I Resolve To . . . Challenge. The Challenge encourages me to write and do photography every day and it is helping me to maintain my focus and momentum toward greater health and happiness. With that in mind, I intend to 'Treat Myself To Fresh Raspberries', and a variety of other fruits and vegetables, as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? The objective is very simple: Do at least one thing each and every day to promote health and happiness for 'YOU'. Banish the 'Someday, Someday, Someday Syndrome'. So far in 2009, I have created four one-minute videos - one for each month of the year - that showcase my daily resolutions for health and happiness. A picture is worth a thousand words and I think each video drives home the the power of taking small daily steps, consistently being positive, focused and determined: "I can. I will. I am." Those six small words are made real with "I Resolve To . . . daily resolves".
Remember: I Resolve To . . . Achieve My New Year Resolutions, One Resolution, One Day At A Time For One Year. It's your choice. Do it today. Turn your resolution into reality in five simple, common sense steps: Dare To Dream, Decide, Define, Develop A Plan, and Do It Daily. Since 2005 when I began been blogging about, and tracking my New Year Resolutions, I have learned a great deal about what works and what doesn't work. In addition to using myself as a case study, I have done a daily study of news articles, polls, 'how to columns', research, and individual blog posts by people who are working on their New Year Resolutions. It has been a fascinating journey. Early on, I came to the conclusion that success can be had if you 'keep it simple' and consistently use common sense. I base my own I Resolve To . . . System for keeping New Year Resolutions on practical principles that have worked for me, year-after-year: Be willing to work hard, stay committed, and take one small step after another every single day (my Toolkit on the left sidebar provides common sense strategies and tips).
This column is part of a continuing series that chronicles some of what I have learned in my daily effort to educate myself about resolution-keeping. Each day, I read dozens of 'Google News Alerts' about New Year Resolutions. We so often hear that most people 'do not' keep their resolutions. Actually, what I have learned in my daily journey through my alerts (and the Internet) is that there is a striking number of people who 'do keep their resolutions'. In coming months, I intend to highlight posts by 'Resolutionistas' - those who make resolutions, keep resolutions and enjoy the journey. I also have compiled, and will share, an array of studies, polls, and 'how to' articles.

Do you have a cause, an issue, or a charity that you adore? One that inspires passion and makes you feel great every time you contribute your time, energy, or money? Breast Cancer Research is among my top priority causes (along with the environment, animals and Pre-Meditated Acts of Kindness). Yesterday, I was thrilled to walk with friends in the Network of Strength Walk To Empower - Breast Cancer Support in Washington, DC. Since I could not be with my Mom who lives in the Midwest, it was a lovely start to Mother's Day.
Showing gratitude by 'giving back' is a wonderful way acknowledge blessings, to 'do good', help others, and promote joy, fulfillment and general good will. My primary 2008 New Year Resolution was to show gratitude for all that I have and all that I am in four areas of my life:
I lived my gratitude resolution here at I Resolve To . . . I also learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the three parts of my resolution that I fulfilled. I believe in turning my resolutions into permanent Lifetime Resolutions, so showing gratitude by 'giving back' continues as a resolution in 2009 with all four projects.
With that in mind, I intend to 'Walk For A Cause', the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day in Washington, D.C., October 9-11, 2009 - as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? The objective is very simple: Do at least one thing each and every day to promote health and happiness for 'YOU'. Mother's Day is that one special day of the year that we pay tribute to 'Mom' for all the wonderful things that she does year-after-year. Long ago, my Mom told me that she is the one person that I can always count on 'being there' for me. Those words were so true and I will never forget them. We might not always agree about everything and 'yes' my Mom and sisters and I have had a spat, or two, over the years (things thought to be important at the time, but long since forgotten), but a strong bond exists through thick and thin. Unfortunately, I can't spend Mother's Day with my Mom, most years because she lives in the Midwest and I live on the East Coast, but I try to make up for that with weekly phone calls and a couple vacation weeks spent with family.
I intend to 'Do Something Nice For Momma On Mother's Day', even though I can't be with my Mom, as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? The objective is very simple: Do at least one thing each and every day to promote health and happiness for 'YOU'. Banish the 'Someday, Someday, Someday Syndrome'. I sent my Mom a gift and card (things that I knew she would enjoy) and my sisters invited her to dinner, so I think Mother's Day was a success in my family. I would like to go one step further by suggesting that we appreciate our Moms year-round, rather than just on Mother's Day. There are so many different ways to say "thank you for all that you have done and all that you do," most of which don't cost a lot of money. Here are a few simple suggestions that I include in my own list of 'daily resolves'in an effort to show appreciation for the time we have together, I know that time isn't infinite, so I want to make the best of it . . .

I love animals. All animals. I even love the raccoons that chew the wheels off my outdoor grill and the knobs off my pool pump, the deer that eat my plants and shrubs in the winter, the squirrels that are naughty on the roof of my house, the birds that build nests above my rain gutters, and the neighborhood dogs that run through my garden beds. Let's face it, I am very forgiving of animals because they are just doing what nature prescribes and are unaware of human rules ("OK", dogs, horses, and even cats are trainable, and can be very well behaved by human standards, but it takes patience and hard work). Some of my friends complain that I love animals more than people most days. I have to admit, some days, animals score higher on my fondness scale, but I can't live without my family, friends and colleagues, and wouldn't want to, as we enrich one another's lives and make them whole.
Small critters, on the other hand, in most cases are defenseless and many rely on humans to live (like the cats, dogs, birds, fish, and other tiny friends that we invite into our homes). With that in mind, I intend to 'Be Kind To Animals', urge others to follow suit, and contribute to organizations that defend animals, as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? The objective is very simple: Do at least one thing each and every day to promote health and happiness for 'YOU'. I count among my animal friends a 19-year-old orange tabby cat that has been with me since she was six-weeks-old (her twin brother passed away in the Fall of 2008 after many years with diabetes; I was heart-broken); three Corydoras Catfish; and two Diamond Doves. I would love to adopt a dog (my cats were adopted), but I know I don't have the time to care for it, so I wait for the day when life is a bit slower. Outdoors, my six acres is inhabited by scores of birds (and a number of hawks), squirrels, deer, box turtles, skinks, praying mantis, frogs, raccoons, snakes and spiders (I am learning to live with and appreciate the snakes and spiders because they eat pest insects), and an occasional fox.
One of the reasons I moved from the city to the country was live full-time in this wonderful environment filled with trees and wildlife. In recent years I have worked to educate myself about the wildlife - their species and habits. And I have long contributed to organizations that protect and care for animals (this summer I intend to fulfill a hold-over 2008 resolution and volunteer on a Virginia Horse Rescue Farm). If you would like to learn more about wildlife and organizations that protect and nurture animals, have a look at these websites - I found them to be very useful . . .

Common sense prescribes that positive thoughts, words and actions will take you farther, faster, than negativity and nay-saying. So, why is it so hard, at times, for folks to be positive? As the author of a Blog about making and keeping New Year Resolutions, I consider the power of positive to be an important concept. If you want to achieve anything, a positive attitude is your ally. If you believe in yourself, your abilities and your eventual success - and you are willing to focus, and work hard with discipline, commitment, passion, and a plan - you stand a far greater chance of achieving your dreams, resolutions and daily goals. As an added bonus, having good self esteem, a positive attitude, and a positive outlook on life in general can promote greater joy and happiness.
With that in mind, I intend to 'Be Positive', as much as possible, as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? The objective is very simple: Do at least one thing each and every day to promote health and happiness for 'YOU'. Banish the 'Someday, Someday, Someday Syndrome'. Instead, make every day New Year's Day. Make every day count. The list of possibilities is infinite and can be tailored to your own dreams, resolutions and daily goals. In working toward my own dreams, resolutions and daily goals, I routinely think about 'what I am doing and how and why I am doing it'. I work to be conscious about my attitude, words, and actions, rather than sleep walking through the day. I have found that 'being conscious' of my thoughts is the first critical step toward harnessing the power of positive. When I'm aware of my attitude and thoughts, it is easier to recognize negativity and change course.
Recently, I was having a stressful day: heavy traffic, difficult people, a schedule full of appointments, and I was really feeling the pressure. When I sensed the negative thoughts creeping in, I made an effort to change my attitude. I reminded myself that it was Friday, the work day would soon be over, I would soon be home and out of traffic, and I would cap off the day with a nice long walk. Focusing on the positive, rather than the negative, helped me to change course and finish the day more pleasantly.
Six simple words helped me to get through that day: "I can. I will. I am." Those six simple words are the starting point for all of my dreams, resolutions and daily goals. I begin with the simple, positive premise, that I can and will achieve - I "Dare To Dream". I make things happen in concrete ways with my I Resolve To . . . 'daily resolves': small steps taken one at a time, one day at a time, that enable me to get to the "I am" stage of achieving my resolutions. So far in 2009, I have created four one-minute videos - one for each month of the year - that showcase my daily resolutions for health and happiness. A picture is worth a thousand words and I think each video drives home the the power of positive: "I can. I will. I am," made real with "I Resolve To . . ." daily resolves.
Make your resolution a permanent Lifetime Resolution, something that's with you for good! Above all, Be A Resolutionista, someone who makes resolutions, keeps resolutions, and enjoys the journey! Let's Go For It!

How often do you postpone, delay and make excuses to avoid exercise? I love to exercise and I occasionally drag my feet, or fail to 'make time', so I understand the obstacles to strapping on those tennis shoes and heading out the door. Finding the kind of exercise that you enjoy, or sports that will keep you motivated day-after-day, can be a challenge.
Ideally, you begin an exercise program with the desire to get fit and healthy, the determination to educate yourself about 'how and what' you need to do, and the commitment to build a plan and schedule daily 'appointments' to exercise. The best part about starting an exercise program is that you don't have to spend a lot of money if you don't want to. If you love heading off to a gyrm or fitness center and prefer the structure of classes, then you will need to invest some cash. But there are many, many free exercise options that are as easy as parking the car a distance from your destination and walking, stretching in your office, or taking the stairs at every opportunity!
I intend to 'Take The Stairs', as part of my I Resolve To . . If you need some help - a little nudge, a bit of inspiration, tips, advice, and news about the best ways to make resolutions a reality - please use IResolveTo.Com as one of your resources. I love to walk. That fact goes without saying, since I make walking the center of so many of my daily resolves: to train and walk 60-miles for the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day (for the second year in a row) this coming October, for instance, or to find new trails to explore. Exercise has been a permanent part of my life since I was a kid and spent my days on the tennis court, atop a bike, or in a pool. I exercise because it makes me feel wonderful physically, boosts my mood, helps me to maintain my muscle tone, weight and overall fitness, and it is good for my heart . . . I could go on, there are so many good reasons to exercise, but you've probably heard the benefits before.
With that in mind, why not get creative with exercise? Look for opportunities to walk a few extra miles, or take the stairs, or do stretching, Pilates, gardening, or Yoga. As I mentioned, you don't have to spend a lot of money. Instead, invest in 'how to' books and videos about your exercise/sports interests (or surf the Internet for credible websites); or invest in a jump rope, a mat for stretching, a bike, a tennis racket, or a basketball. The key to success is to exercise in a variety of ways that you enjoy and look for opportunities to insert them into your day. There is a wealth of information on the Internet that describes the reasons that exercise is important, how to start an exercise program, and exercise safely. Here is a short list of websites that I have found to be useful:

Some folks relax by hanging in a hammock with a good book, others engage in a favorite hobby. One of my favorite hobbies is also one of my favorite ways of relaxing: Gardening. I love spending time outdoors, getting my hands dirty, and watching my yard, trees and garden beds gradually take glorious shape. With that in mind, I intend to 'MOW', as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? "Where in the world is _____________!?!" How many times each day do you ask yourself that question, while at work, at home, at school, or at play? Clutter and disorganization can be frustrating roadblocks for productivity, the joy of accomplishment and peace of mind. When you can't put your hands on the tools you need to achieve, it can be an impediment to success with work and home projects, hobbies, school - and 'yes', New Year Resolutions, dreams and daily goals. Why not make a firm decision today to eliminate 'clutter and disorganization' one room at a time - the office, for instance. If you can't wrap your arms and head around one room because the challenge is simply too daunting, start with one drawer, one closet, or one bookshelf. Tackle 'de-cluttering' one small step at a time, one day at a time, and rack up big results over the long haul!
My 2009 mission is to 'clear the clutter' and organize my personal, professional, and creative worlds. I intend to 'Maintain A Clutter-Free Office', as part of my I Resolve To . . . Challenge: 365 Resolutions For Health & Happiness. Why not join me? The objective is very simple: Do at least one thing each and every day to promote health and happiness for 'YOU'. So many things in life begin and end with simple common sense. A messy, cluttery, disorganized desk makes me feel out-of-control. It leads to frustration and ultimately crabbiness. This winter all of these feelings were coming to a head for me in my work space. I moved into my current home five years ago. It is more than double the size of my last home and provides a good-sized office where I work most of the time. When I moved in, the house had plenty of empty drawers, closets, cupboards and floor space. I quickly learned, If there is a vacuum, it will be filled in a new home, so I made a promise, last Fall, to fight the clutter. I am working room by room to regain control of my possessions, clean and organize. I am overjoyed about the results: My office is tidy with no clutter, everything has a place, and I can readily find what I need, when I need it!
I view this resolution, as a way to build more serenity into my day and promote productivity with virtually all of my projects. If you are interested in making your own 'De-Clutter Resolution', here are 5 simple, common sense steps - built upon my I Resolve To . . . System for achieving New Year Resolutions - that can serve as a launching pad:
To be fair, most of the rooms in my house are neat and organized because I segregate the piles in specific places like the office, utility room, garage, and family room (where I keep most things neatly stacked). I actually enjoy cleaning and make it a priority most of the time, but there is always room for improvement, especially when I get busy and fall behind. The ultimate goal behind my 'De-Clutter Resolution' is to organize in 2009, so that on-going maintenance in 2010 will be a snap!

Turn your resolution into reality in five simple, common sense steps: Dare To Dream, Decide, Define, Develop A Plan, and Do It Daily.
